7 Signs Of Plumbing Problems That You Shouldn't Ignore

Jul 17, 2023

Modern plumbing is one of society's most important innovations, and your home's plumbing system should function properly all the time. Unfortunately, plumbing problems can occur even in the newest, most advanced plumbing systems, and you may prevent more serious issues from happening if you know how to recognize many of the signs of plumbing problems.

1. Water Puddling

If you see water puddles that have formed near pipes or in other parts of your home, you likely have a plumbing leak that should be fixed immediately. The moisture that's coming from leaking pipes or plumbing fixtures could damage wood and other materials that support your home's structure. The water might also come in contact with electrical components and could start an electrical fire.

2. Mold and Mildew Growth

Poor ventilation is often the source of mold and mildew growth, but you may also have a plumbing leak that's causing these formations. When a plumbing problem is to blame, mold and mildew stains are likelier to be seen on walls and ceilings. You should schedule a professional plumbing system inspection if you smell mold or mildew odors in your home without a known cause.

3. Water Pressure Changes

Your water pressure might suddenly become too low, too high, or alternate between low and high when you're showering or running water for other reasons. If the pressure is low, there could be problems with your pipes or pressure regulator. A regulator problem or some other issue could also be making your water pressure run too high or fluctuate.

4. Sinks and Tubs Drain Slowly

If the water in a sink or bathtub drains slowly, there could be a blockage in the drain or somewhere further along the pipeline. Hair strands, food particles, or other debris could be clogging a drain or pipe and interfering with the water flow. While some clogs are easy to remove on your own, more serious blockages should be removed by a plumbing professional who uses special tools to clear the obstructions.

5. Hard Water Issues

Hard water is water that contains high levels of calcium, magnesium, and other hard elements. Even though hard water is generally safe to drink, it can have a slightly bitter or salty taste. Hard water can also be strenuous on your pipes and other plumbing appliances and cause additional problems. Fortunately, plumbers can use water-softening treatments to restore your water to normal and protect your plumbing system from harm.

Hard water isn't always difficult to notice, and testing may be used to determine your water's hardness. You should also be aware of the signs of hard water, such as:

  • Slow-running faucets
  • Strange sounds from the plumbing system
  • Soap scum in the shower or tub
  • Filmy residue on hair and skin after washing
  • Cloudy spots or film on newly washed glasses
  • Washing machine, dishwasher, and/or water heater inefficiency

6. Pipes Are Noisy

You should expect to hear water flowing through some of your pipes when you're running water or draining, but strange rattling or banging sounds often indicate a pipe or water problem. The water flowing through your pipes may be too hard, or the air chambers in your pipes could be flooded. There's also the possibility that your pipes could have been fitted improperly.

7. Toilet Flushing Difficulties

Flushing problems with toilets can occur for different reasons. Weak flushes or consistent toilet clogs may be the result of blockages or old components that need to be updated. Your toilet may also flush on its own if it has a flapper problem or a leaking toilet tank. Whatever the cause of your flushing problems may be, a plumber can work hard to get to the root of the issue and offer you the right solution.
